Along the arc of the coin's edge on the left side is the country name Botswana in English – 'BOTSWANA'. On the right, the inscription 'IPELEGENG', meaning 'Ipelegeng', a city in Botswana. Below, the year of minting '1977'. In the central part – the country's coat of arms: an oval shield, supported on the left by an elephant tusk, on the right – by a stalk of sorghum. On the shield, in the upper part, are three interlocking gears, below – waves, and beneath them – the head of a domestic bull. On the motto ribbon below the shield is the inscription 'PULA', meaning 'rain'.
