Reverse
In the central part of the reverse is a relief image of a Feathertail Glider (Acrobates pygmaeus). To the left of the mammal's head is the numeral 1. Below the image are the designer's initials, Stuart Devlin - 'SD'.
Obverse
In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. On the left side, following the curve of the coin's edge, is the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II'. On the right side is the name of the dominion 'AUSTRALIA' and the year of minting '1979'.
