The inscription is placed over the outlines of a map of Europe. Six vertical parallel lines extend upwards and downwards from it, ending in 12 stars.

Along the edge of the inner disc: at the top and right, the name of the issuing state, the Portuguese Republic, in Portuguese 'REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA'; at the bottom, the inscription '1910 - 2010' — 1910 being the year of the Portuguese Republic's foundation, 2010 the centennial anniversary year and year of issue; on the left, the abbreviation 'INCM' — the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint and 'JOSE C NDIDO' — the signature of the artist José Cândido. In the central part, a portrait of the national personification of Portugal, the figure of 'Marianne', facing right, against the background of the country's lesser coat of arms.
