The central part features a sequence of cells that extends beyond the inner disc to the left, top, and bottom, touching the rim; below it is the inscription '5 €' (5 Euro). Along the edge of the coin, the text is arranged in an arc: at the bottom, the country name 'SUOMI FINLAND' in Finnish and Swedish is inscribed in a semicircle, flanked on the left by a stylized cornucopia (mint mark) and on the right by the Latin letter 'K' (artist mark for Tapio Kettunen); at the top is the year of issue '2008'.
Obverse
The field of the inner disc depicts a Petri dish containing microorganisms. Along the edge of the coin, an arc of text in Finnish reads '100 VUOTTA TIEDE JA TUTKIMUS' (100 Years of Science and Research).
