In the central part, within the inner field, is the coat of arms of the region – Finnish Karelia. It features a crowned heraldic shield depicting: two arms, the left clad in plate armor wielding an upright straight sword, the right in chainmail wielding a sabre, with a crown above them. To the left of the shield is the numeral 5, to the right the Latin letter 'T' – the designer's mark for Nora Tapper and a heraldic lion within a circle – the mintmark of the Mint of Finland. Along the upper edge arc is the year of issue '2011'. Below is the inscription in Finnish 'EURO' (Euro).
Obverse
In the center is a blank for birch bark weaving. Along the rim is the country name 'Finland', on the left in Finnish 'SUOMI', on the right in Swedish 'FINLAND'.
