Reverse In the center, a square with a field of horizontal lines containing a 'latent image' visible when the viewing angle changes: the number '47'. On the sides of the square are characters meaning 'local government': top - '地', left - '治', right - '方', bottom - '自'. Along the edge of the coin is a decorative raised pattern of dots, bordered by inscriptions in English and Japanese: 'JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM 500 YEN 平成 22 年' (Japan 47 Prefectures, Coin Program, 500 Yen, 22nd year of Heisei era).
Obverse On the left, the Sannai-Maruyama archaeological site is depicted: a three-tiered, tower-like structure. In the center, a standing Dogū figurine with bulging eyes is shown; on the right, a seated Dogū with hands resting on its knees. Below the site, the prefecture name 'Aomori' in Japanese '青森県' and English 'AOMORI'. Along the edge of the coin are raised dots, bordered by inscriptions in Japanese characters: at the top, the country name '日本国' (Japan), at the bottom '五百円' (500 yen).
