In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, the text 'SECOND REPUBLIC 13th DECEMBER 1972' translates from English as 'Second Republic 13 December 1972'. Below is the inscription '50 NGWEE' – 'fifty ngwee', flanked on both sides by rosettes in the form of dots. The central part features the national coat of arms of Zambia. The shield has 6 wavy vertical bars; above the shield are crossed a pickaxe and a hoe; above that, an eagle with spread wings looking back. The shield is supported on both sides by a man and a woman standing on a grassy base. The ribbon bears the motto 'One Zambia One Nation'.
