At the top are cocoa beans, to the left and right are 2 olive branches, to the right is a grapevine. In the center is the inscription 50 francs in French in 2 lines: "50 FRANCS". Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is the French inscription: "UNION MONÉTAIRE OUEST AFRICAINE" - "WEST AFRICAN MONETARY UNION", at the bottom - the year of issue: "1980".
Obverse
In the center is an image of a sawfish. Along the edge of the coin is the French text: "BANQUE CENTRALE DES ÉTATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST", which translates as: "CENTRAL BANK OF WEST AFRICAN STATES". At the bottom are the designer's initials, Raymond Joly: "RJ".
