Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. In the center, within a wreath formed by olive and oak branches tied at the base, is a two-line inscription '5 / REIS', meaning 'five reis'.
Obverse
Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. Along the upper edge is an inscription in Catalan: 'CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL', translating to 'Carlos I King of Portugal'. Below is the mint year '1899', flanked on both sides by raised dots. In the center, within a circular border, is the right-facing profile of the king. Below the portrait truncation is the engraver's signature of Valancio Alves: 'ALVES'.
