    In the central part is the monogram of Prince Philip Mountbatten, surrounded by the garter of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, bearing the French inscription 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shame on him who thinks evil of it). On either side are laurel branches, crossed at the bottom. Around the edge of the coin is a chain-like pattern, with the heraldic symbol of the island at the top. Along the pattern are English inscriptions: from left to right 'DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEM', at the bottom - 'ONE CROWN', flanked on the left by the year the award was founded '1956', and on the right by the anniversary date '1981'.

    In the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. Below the portrait truncation are the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Along the rim are English inscriptions: on the left the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN', on the right the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', at the bottom the year of issue '1981'. Around the circumference along the rim are decorative raised denticles.
