In the central part, a 'V' - the Roman numeral 5, with the letters 'R' on all four sides of it, all framed by an ornate vignette. Around the edge of the coin is an inscription in Latin: 'MODERATO SPLENDEAT. VSV', translating to 'Moderation illuminates' and the mint year 1695, separated by two four-petaled flowers. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
Obverse
In the central part, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is text in Latin: 'PETRVS II D G PORTVG R D ÆTHIOP', the title of King Peter II of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
