    In the central part is the emblem of the BCEAO - a sawfish, dividing the inscription '1 F.' (1 franc) into two parts. In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the French text 'BANQUE CENTRALE' (CENTRAL BANK), below - 'DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST' (OF THE STATES OF WEST AFRICA). The inscriptions are separated from each other on the left by a cornucopia (mint mark of the Paris Mint), on the right – by an owl (mint director's mark for Raymond Joly).

    In the center, facing front and surrounded by plants, is the head of an antelope. Around the circumference along the rim is a pattern, with the year of minting '1972' below.
