    In the central part is a Tuatara, an endemic reptile of New Zealand. Below it is a large number 5. To the left near the rim are the letters 'JB' — the engraver's mark of George James Berry.

    Along the upper arc of the coin's edge on the left is the inscription 'ELIZABETH II'. To the right is stamped the issuing country 'NEW ZEALAND'. The year of mintage '1982' is at the bottom. In the central part is a right-facing profile of the Queen wearing a crown.
