Obverse In the central part, the coat of arms of the Republic of Botswana. It consists of a traditional shield featuring: three cogwheels in the upper part, three waves in the center, and a bull's head in the lower part. At the base is the motto 'Pula' (Rain). To the left of the shield is an elephant tusk, to the right a stalk of sorghum. Inscriptions along the rim: the year of issue '1989' at the bottom, the country name 'BOTSWANA' on the left, and 'IPELEGENG' (Self-Reliance) on the right. All inscriptions are in Setswana.
