The central part of the reverse features a relief depiction of the lesser coat of arms of Portugal: on the shield, five escutcheons with bezants are arranged in the form of a cross; the edges of the large shield are surrounded by a wide, ribbed border with seven castles. On either side of the heraldic shield, two heptagonal relief stars are arranged vertically. Below the coat of arms is the inscription "2$50", meaning "two and a half escudos". Along the arc of the coin's edge are the artists' signatures: on the left — Martins Barata 'MARTINS BARATA DEL.', on the right — Marcelino Norte 'M.NORTE'.
  • Obverse
Along the rim are inscriptions in Portuguese: on the left 'REPUBLICA', on the right 'PORTUGUESA', translating to 'Portuguese Republic'; at the bottom is the year of minting '1985', flanked on both sides by relief elements in the form of crosses. The central part features an image of a lateen-rigged caravel with raised sails and a forked flag with five relief circular elements.
