    In the central part is a left-facing profile portrait of theoretical physicist Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck. Along the edge of the coin is an arc of text: at the top the person's name in German 'MAX PLANCK', at the bottom his years of life '1858-1947', flanked on the left by a graphical symbol for temperature below zero and on the right for above zero. Along the edge of the coin are decorative elements in the form of dots.
  • Obverse
    In the center is the symbol of state power of the FRG: a heraldic eagle facing left, with wings spread and plumage lowered. Around the circumference along the rim with raised elements in the form of dots are inscriptions in German: on the left and top the country name 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' (Federal Republic of Germany), on the right – 'DEUTSCHE MARK' (German mark). At the bottom is the numeral '2', to the right of it the mintmark of the Stuttgart Mint – 'F'. At the eagle's feet, the minting year '1964' is split into two parts: on the left – '19', on the right '64'.
