In the central part is Benedict of Nursia, holding a book with his motto in Latin: "ORA ET LABORA" - "PRAY AND WORK". To his left is the mint mark of Rome: "R", to the right - 100 lire: "L.100". In the upper part, along the rim of the coin, is text in Italian: "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" - "VATICAN CITY".
Obverse
In the central part is a portrait of Pope John Paul II. Below is the inscription: "ACanevari", denoting the initials of the artist, Angelo Canevari. Along the rim of the coin from left to right runs text in Latin: "IOANNIS PAVLVS II P.M. A. XII MCMXC" - "JOHN PAUL II. 12TH YEAR OF PONTIFICATE. 1990".
