In the central part, a fish facing right, with seaweed below. In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge, the English text 'PATRONS OF THE OCEAN'.
Obverse
At the top, the English text 'BANK OF ZAMBIA', at the bottom the inscription '1000 KWACHA'. In the upper part, the state coat of arms, consisting of a shield with six wavy vertical stripes, above it crossed hoe and pickaxe, and above that an eagle looking back. The shield is held by a man on the right and a woman on the left, standing on a grassy field. At the base of the coat of arms is the motto 'One Zambia One Nation'. In the lower part is a circle containing the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. On either side are the digits of the split year of issue '2001': '20' on the left, '01' on the right.
