    In the central part is a profile head of Quetzalcoatl. To its left, in two lines, is the symbol: "$" and the numeral: "5". Above the image is the letter "M", denoting the Mexico City Mint mintmark, below is the inscription in Spanish: "QUETZALCOATL". At the bottom is the year of issue, 1984. The edge of the coin features decorative elements in the form of dots.

    In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge, is the text of the country's name, the United Mexican States, in Spanish: "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". The central part features the coat of arms of Mexico: an eagle perched on a cactus, gripping a snake. In the lower part, following the curve of the coin's edge, are oak and laurel leaves tied together with a ribbon. The edge of the coin features a decorative raised pattern of circles.
