Along the rim are inscriptions in Japanese: at the top '日本国' - 'STATE OF JAPAN', at the bottom '五百円' - '500 YEN'. The rim features decorative raised dots. The central part depicts the Sakurajima volcano. Above it is the name of Kagoshima Prefecture: in English at the top 'KAGOSHIMA', and in Japanese at the bottom '鹿児島県'.
