    In the central part, 'XX' - the Roman numeral 20, the digits of which are separated by a flower image. To the left, right, and below it are the letters 'R', all framed by an ornate vignette. On the numeral and slightly above is a countermark from the period 1809-1837. Around the edge of the coin is a Latin inscription: 'MODERATO SPLENDEAT.VSV', translated as 'Moderation illuminates', and the minting year 1699, separated by two four-petaled flowers. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.

    In the central part, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is text in Latin: 'PETRVS.II.D.G.PORTVG.R.D.ÆTHIOP', the title of King John V of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
