Along the upper rim, the Portuguese inscription 'III CENTENÁRIO DA MORTE', translated as '300th Anniversary of the Death'; along the lower rim, 'PADRE ANTÓNIO VIEIRA' — 'Father António Vieira'; on the right, in two lines, a stylized depiction of the birth year and the tercentenary year of the commemorative date, as well as the year of issue '1697 - 1997'. The central part features a portrait of the Padre, in left-facing half-profile. Below it, on the left, the abbreviation 'INCM' — the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint, and on the right, the artist's signature by Hélder Batista 'H. BATISTA'.

Along the upper rim, the name of the Portuguese Republic in Portuguese 'REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA'; along the lower rim, the inscription '500$00', meaning 'five hundred escudos'. The inscriptions are separated on the left and right by five raised dot elements. The central part features a symbolic depiction of the sun, with the lesser coat of arms of Portugal depicted on its right side.
