In the central part, a large numeral 2 on the left, with the English inscription 'EURO' to its right, translating to '2 Euro'. Below the letter 'O' is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'. The inscription is placed over the outlines of a map of Europe. Six vertical parallel lines extend upwards and downwards from it, ending in 12 stars.

Around the edge of the coin, 12 stars of the European Union are evenly placed against a background of concentric circular lines. Along the edge of the inner disc: at the bottom, the Portuguese inscription '2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA', translating to 'Second Lusophony Games Lisbon'; on the left, the abbreviation 'INCM' – the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint; on the right, 'J. AURÉLIO' – the signature of the artist José Aurélio. In the central upper part, the lesser coat of arms of Portugal is depicted, with the issuing country's name in English, 'PORTUGAL', around the edge of the heraldic shield. Below the coat of arms is a stylized depiction of the 2009 Games emblem: an athlete with a flowing ribbon celebrating victory, and the year of the competition '2009'.
