Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is the country's motto: 'UNITE, EGALITE, PAIX' (Unity, Equality, Peace). All inscriptions are in French, with raised dots between the words. Below the stern of the boat is a cornucopia (the mintmark of the Paris Mint), and below the bow is a bee (the privy mark of Mint Director Pierre Rodier).
  • Obverse
In the central part is the state coat of arms of the Republic of Djibouti (a laurel wreath, inside which are a shield and a spear topped with a five-pointed star. On either side are two hands, each holding a traditional dagger). Around the circumference along the rim is the country's name in French - 'REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI', with the year of issue '1996' below.
