    In the central part, a large numeral '2' on the left, with the English inscription 'EURO' to its right, translating to '2 Euro'. Below the letter 'O' is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'. The inscription is placed over the outlines of a map of Europe. From these outlines, six vertical parallel lines extend upwards and downwards, ending with 12 stars.

    Around the edge of the coin are 12 stars of the European Union. Along the edge of the inner disc: at the top, the name of the traveler Fernão Mendes Pinto in Portuguese 'FERNÃO MENDES PINTO'; on the left the inscription '1511' - the year of the traveler's birth; on the right '2011' - the year of his quincentenary and the year of issue. In the central part, a sailing ship is depicted sailing on waves formed from the names of countries and lands visited by F. M. Pinto during his travels 'PORTUGAL INDIA MOCAMBIQUE TANEGASHIMA JAPAO...', translating from Portuguese as 'PORTUGAL INDIA MOZAMBIQUE TANEGASHIMA JAPAN and others'. In the 'waves' is also the name of his book 'Peregrinação' - 'Pilgrimage'. To the left of the 'sea' is the abbreviation 'INCM' - the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint, to the right 'IC-FB' - the initials of the artist Isabel Carriço Almada.
