Reverse In the central part, a caterpillar of a night moth is depicted on a branch of a mopane tree. Below the branch is the numeral 5. Along the lower edge arc is the inscription in Setswana 'PULA' (pula). To the right, above, and to the left are leaves of the mopane tree.
Obverse In the central part is the coat of arms of the state of Botswana. It consists of a traditional shield featuring: in the upper part three cogwheels, in the central part three waves, and in the lower part a bull's head. At the base is the motto with the inscription 'Pula' (Rain). On either side of the shield are zebras: the zebra on the right holds a sorghum stalk, the zebra on the left holds an elephant tusk. Below the coat of arms is the year of minting '2000'. In the upper part, along the edge arc of the coin, is the country name 'BOTSWANA'. Below is the inscription 'IPELEGENG' (Self-Reliance). All inscriptions are in the Setswana language.
