    In the central part, within an openwork circular frame, is a palm tree dividing the year of issue into two parts: "19" on the left and "49" on the right (1949). Along the upper edge is the inscription "BRITISH WEST AFRICA". At the bottom is "ONE SHILLING". The edge is decorated with decorative denticles.
  • Obverse
    In the central part is the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain wearing a crown. Along the edge of the coin runs the Latin legend "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF:", which translates to "GEORGE VI BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF ALL BRITAIN, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH" (a cross begins the legend). Below the monarch's neck truncation are the initials of the British medallist "PM" - Percy Metcalfe. The coin's edge is decorated with raised decorative denticles.
