Obverse Along the upper edge of the coin on the left is the country name in English – 'BOTSWANA'. On the right, the inscription 'IPELEGENG', meaning 'Ipelegeng', a town in Botswana. Below is the year of minting '1976'. In the central part – a simplified version of the national coat of arms: an oval shield depicting three interlocking gears, waves below, and beneath them the head of a domestic bull. To the left of the shield is an elephant tusk, to the right a stalk of sorghum. On the motto ribbon below the shield is the inscription 'PULA', meaning 'rain'.
