    Wide rim. In the central part, within a circle of smaller diameter formed by a rim, a palm tree is depicted against a sea background, with a two-masted steamship sailing away over the horizon to its right. At the top, along the rim, the inscription in English: 'ONE CENT'. At the bottom, along the rim, the year of issue 1862. The inscriptions are separated by two five-pointed stars on each side.
  • Obverse
    Wide rim. In the central part, the head of the goddess Liberty in a Phrygian cap facing left is depicted; a five-pointed star is on the cap, and the engraver's initials 'W.J.T.' for W.J. Taylor are on the truncation of the neck. To the left, top, and right, along the rim, the country name Republic of Liberia in English: 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA'. At the bottom, along the rim, three five-pointed stars.
