Reverse
In the central part of the reverse is a relief image of a fragment of a chessboard with six chess pieces in a checkmate position. Below the pawn figure is the mintmark of the Havana mint. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is an inscription in Spanish: «CENTENARIO DE JOSE RAUL CAPABLANCA», which translates to: «Centenary of José Raúl Capablanca». Along the lower edge, separated by dots, are the years 1888-1988.
Obverse
In the central part is the coat of arms of the Republic of Cuba. Above it is an inscription in Spanish: «REPUBLICA DE CUBA», which translates to: «Republic of Cuba». In the lower part, along the edge of the coin, is an inscription in Spanish: «1 PESO» - 1 peso. To the left and right of the coat of arms, along the rim, are two five-pointed stars.
