    In the central part, a galley sailing under full sail. To its right is the numeral 5. Along the arc of the right edge is the inscription 'butut', in English at the top: "BUTUTS", and at the bottom in Arabic with diacritics: "بتوت".

    Along the arc of the coin's edge from left to right runs the text Republic of The Gambia in English and the year of issue: "REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA 1971". In the central part is a left-facing profile portrait of the country's first Prime Minister, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
