The guardsman on the left is handing over a standard, the one on the right is receiving it. On the left, a cameo with a portrait facing right, above it a two-line inscription '50 PENCE'. Along the upper edge in an arc – 'TO CELEBRATE 70 YEARS 1996'. On the right, a stylized image of a fish.

In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf – 'RDM'. Along the rim are inscriptions in English: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Overseas Territory 'ASCENSION ISLAND'.
