In the central part, against a map of West Africa, a frontal head of an African elephant is depicted, with the inscription '4 AFRIKA' below. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in French: 'EMISSION MONETAIRE DE L'INSTITUT DE DEVELOPPEMENT DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST IDAO' (Monetary Emission of the West African Development Institute).

In the center are portraits: on the left, the head of the Roman Catholic Church John Paul II, on the right, Archbishop Nestor Assogba. Below the image is a three-line legend in English: 'S.S. Jean Paul II/ Mgr Nestor ASSOGBA/ Bénin 1982 & 1993'. Below that is a stylized image of an elephant. Around the circumference along the rim are inscriptions in French: the country name 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN', the inscription '6000 CFA', the year of issue '2005', and the legend 'VOYAGES DU PAPE EN AFRIQUE' (Papal Visit to Africa).
