In the central part, within a raised circle, a lion walking to the right against a background of mountains. Inscription along the upper rim in English: "EAST AFRICA"; at the bottom, in three lines - "1 SHILLING 1949", with a diamond to the left and right. The edge is decorated with decorative denticles.
Obverse
In the central part, the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain wearing a crown. Inscription along the rim in Latin "GEORGE THE SIXTH KING": on the left the monarch's name "GEORGIVS", on the right "SEXTVS∙REX". Below the truncation of the monarch's neck is the designer's initials "PM" of the British medallist Percy Metcalfe. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
