Reverse Around the edge from left to right is the motto of Djibouti in French 'UNITE . EGALITE . PAIX', meaning 'Unity-Equality-Peace'. In the central part are large numerals 20, below them the inscription 'FRANCS', meaning 'twenty francs'. Below the inscription is an image of a traditional dhow sailboat against the backdrop of a modern liner and a floating crane. At the bottom left is the mark of the Paris Mint — a cornucopia. On the right, a bee — the personal privy mark of Chief Engraver Pierre Rodier.
Obverse Around the edge from left to right is the text in French 'REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI', meaning 'Republic of Djibouti', a state in East Africa. In the lower part along the curve of the coin's edge is the year of minting '1999'. In the central part is the Seal of Djibouti, one of the main state symbols. It features a laurel wreath, inside which is depicted traditional regional weaponry: two daggers and a spear on a round shield. The spear is topped with a five-pointed star. The hands holding the daggers symbolize the two main ethnic groups of the country — the Afars and the Issa.
