In the central part, a black-and-red broadbill is depicted sitting on a branch. Below it is the species name in Malay: «TAXAU RAKIT». In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the English text: ENDANGERED SPECIES SERIES. To the left, below, and to the right are the species names in English and Latin: «BLACK AND RED BROADBILL», «CYMBIRHYNCHUS MACRORHYNCHUS».

In the central part is the emblem: a stylized depiction of a hornbill head within a double circle. Around the emblem is an inscription in Malay: «SIRI BURUNG 2004» - Bird Series 2004. In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is text in Malay: «SERI HAIWAN TERANCAM» - Endangered Species, below - «BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA».
