Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is the French text: "UNION MONETAIRE OUEST-AFRICAINE" - West African Monetary Union.
Obverse
In the central part, a gold-dust weight (Taku-Ashanti) figure. Below it is the letter "RJ" - the mark of Paris Mint designer Raymond Joly. Around the edge of the coin is the French inscription: "BANQUE CENTRALE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST" - Central Bank of West African States.
