    In the central part is the coat of arms of Montevideo. It consists of a heraldic shield, inside which is a smaller shield of the same shape depicting the sea at the bottom and a hill with a tower in the center. In the border between the shields is the unofficial motto of Uruguay 'CON LIBERTAD NI OFENDO NI TEMO' (Being free, I neither offend nor fear). Behind the shield are crossed a sword and a palm branch; above the shield is a crown in the form of a fortress wall with four towers. On both sides of the shield are laurel branches. Along the upper edge of the coin is the text, from left to right: '250 AÑOS DE LA FUNDACION DE MONTEVIDEO' (250 years since the founding of Montevideo). At the bottom is the mint year '1976', flanked on both sides by a dot.

    Against a background of a brick wall are depicted: on the left, a portrait of the ruler of the Río de la Plata and founder of the city of Montevideo - Bruno Mauricio de Zabala; on the right, the inscription 'N$5' (5 nuevos pesos); below, on a block of the wall, the country name 'URUGUAY'. At the top, right, and bottom is the inscription 'ZABALA FUNDADOR DE MONTEVIDEO' (Zabala founder of Montevideo). Below the portrait on the left is the mint mark of the Santiago mint - 'So'. All inscriptions are in Spanish.
