Along the right arc is the name Kupe in English 'KUPE'. In the central part is a portrait of the Polynesian navigator and discoverer of New Zealand, Kupe. Below is the inscription '5 DOLLARS'.

Along the arc of the coin's edge on the left is the English text 'ELIZABETH II', on the right – the country name New Zealand 'NEW ZEALAND'. Below is the year of issue '1992'. In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Below the truncation are the letters 'RDM' – the engraver's mark of Raphael David Maklouf.
