Reverse Along the upper edge arc is the Haitian motto "LIBERTE . EGALITE . FRATERNITE" — translated from French as "LIBERTY . EQUALITY . FRATERNITY". Below is the inscription "1 SENTIME", meaning "one centime", flanked on both sides by raised elements in the form of five-pointed stars. In the central part is the national coat of arms of Haiti: a palm tree topped with a Phrygian cap (cap of liberty) shelters six flags of the Republic with its leaves, three on each side, and two cannons. Before them are trophies: a drum, a bugle, rifles, ship anchors, cannonballs. The motto on the ribbon "L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE" means "In unity there is strength".
Obverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised denticles. On the left and right are inscriptions in French "REPUBLIQUE" and "D HAITIAN 78" — Republic of Haiti. Below is the year of minting "1881". The inscriptions are separated by raised pentagonal stars. In the central part is a female profile facing right, wearing a national headdress. Under the headscarf and below the neck truncation are the letters "ROTY" and "LAFORESTRIE" — the engravers' marks for Louis-Oscar Roty and Laforestrie.
