The central part depicts two groups of people: on the left, people offer goods, on the right – they receive them. Along the edge of the coin are inscriptions in Italian: from left to right the state name 'CITTA’ DEL VATICANO' (Vatican City), below 'L. 50' (50 lire). Below the image is the Latin letter 'R' – the mint mark of Rome.
Obverse
The central part features a right-facing profile of the Pope. Along the edge of the coin, from left to right, runs a Latin text – 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. AN. XI' (John Paul II Supreme Pontiff 11th year), and the Gregorian year of mintage '1989' in Roman numerals 'MCMLXXXIX'. Below the truncation, the artist's name 'E. Manfrini'.
