Reverse On the left, top, and bottom along the rim are three inscriptions with the motto of Djibouti in French: 'UNITE', 'EGALITE', 'PAIX', which translate to 'Unity-Equality-Peace'. The inscriptions are separated by raised dots. In the central part of the reverse is a relief depiction of ships in a port, above them a two-line inscription '20 FRANCS' — 'twenty francs'.
Obverse Along the edge of the coin is the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI', which translates from French as 'Republic of Djibouti'. Below is the year of minting '1983'. In the central part is the Seal of Djibouti — one of the main state symbols. It features a laurel wreath, inside which is depicted traditional regional weaponry: 2 daggers and a spear behind a round shield. The spear is topped with a five-pointed star. The hands holding the daggers symbolize the two main ethnic groups of the country: the Afar and the Issa.
