    In the central part, a two-line inscription 'UN /CENTAVO', which translates from Spanish as 'one centavo'. Below is a decorative raised pattern in the form of a dot with horizontal rays radiating to the sides.
  • Obverse
    Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised denticles. Along the arc of the coin's edge on the left, top, and right is the name of the country, Republic of Guatemala, in Spanish: 'REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA'. The year of minting '1881' is at the bottom. In the central part is the coat of arms of Guatemala. On two crossed Remington rifles with bayonets and two swords is placed a scroll with the text 'LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821' – 'September 15, 1821', the date of the proclamation of Central America's independence from Spain. A quetzal bird, symbolizing freedom, sits on the scroll. Two olive branches frame the composition on three sides.
