Along the upper edge of the coin, the French text 'BANQUE CENTRALE' is inscribed, with 'ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST' below, translating to 'Central Bank of the West African States'. The inscriptions are separated by raised elements. In the central part of the reverse, a raised depiction of a goldweight separates the inscription '5 F.', denoting 'five francs'. A goldweight is a figurine in the shape of a human, animal, or bird, used by the Ashanti people for weighing gold dust.
Obverse
Around the edge of the coin is a decorative raised pattern resembling petals and berries. In the lower part, along the edge, is the mint year '1987'. In the central part is an image of an antelope's head. To the left are the letters 'G.B.L. BAZOR' — the mark of the engraver Lucien Georges Bazor.
