In the central part is the official symbol of Australia: a shield, with a kangaroo depicted to its left and an emu to its right. Above the shield is the 7-pointed Commonwealth Star, below it is the number 50.
Obverse
In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Below the neck truncation are the designer Ian Rank-Broadley's initials: "IRB". Along the rim is text in English: on the left the Queen's name "ELIZABETH II", on the right the country name Australia and the year of minting: "AUSTRALIA 2009".
