    In the central part, the lesser coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield, a bordure with seven castles around the edge of the shield, in the center - five small shields arranged in the form of a cross, each bearing five bezants. On either side of the shield are two seven-pointed stars, below the inscription "5$00" (5 Escudos). Along the edge of the coin are the artists' names: left - Jaime Martins Barata, right - Marcelino Norte de Almeida.

    In the central part, a caravel sailing to the right, its flag bearing five bezants. Along the rim inscriptions: left, top, and right the name of the republic in Portuguese "REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA" (Portuguese Republic), at the bottom the year of minting "1977", flanked on both sides by a cross.
