    In the central part, a large numeral 5 on the left. On the right, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'five euro cents'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark 'LL' for Luc Luycx.

    Twelve five-pointed stars, symbolizing the Eurozone countries, are placed near the rim on the left and right. At the top, the issuing country's name in Italian 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO' – 'Vatican City'. At the bottom, the year of issue 2004 and the letter 'R' – the mintmark of the Rome Mint. In the central part, a left-facing portrait of Pope John Paul II. Below the portrait, the abbreviation 'GV.UP Inc' – the engraver's mark for Guido Veroi.
