Closer to the left edge of the coin is the state coat of arms, on the right the number 25. Above them the country name in two lines 'REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA' (Portuguese Republic), below them - 'ESCUDOS' (Escudos). All inscriptions are executed horizontally in Portuguese.
Obverse
In the central part is a left-facing profile portrait in a wreath. Below the neck truncation is the engraver's signature of Marcelino Norte de Almeida 'NORTE D'ALMEIDA', on the left the mint year '1981'. Along the rim are inscriptions in Portuguese: on the left - 'LIBERDADE' (Freedom), on the right - 'DEMOCRACIA' (Democracy).
