    On the left is a stylized depiction of a ship's prow (rostrum), a motif common on Greek and Roman coins as a symbol of seafaring. At the top right is a sailing ship. Against the background of a wide meander ribbon is a stylized inscription: ANCIENT / NAVIGATION.

    At the top of the obverse is the trident (the small State Coat of Arms of Ukraine) and a stylized circumferential inscription: NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE, below which is the coin's year of issue – 2012. Superimposed on a stylized map are a wind rose (left), symbolizing sea voyages, and an ancient coin of the Bosporan Kingdom (right). At the bottom are a meander ribbon, the denomination – 5 / HRYVNIAS, and the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.
