Along the left edge arc of the coin is the year of issue '1973'. Above, the inscription 'DIX MAKUTA' is separated by the large numerals 10, meaning 'ten makuta'. In the center is the coat of arms of Zaire: a leopard's head, below it two crossed spears, surrounded by a laurel branch and an elephant tusk. The motto on the ribbon 'Paix, Justice, Travail' translates to 'Justice, Peace, Labour'.

On the left side, along the edge arc of the coin, is the French inscription 'BANQUE', on the right 'DU ZAIRE', translating to 'Bank of Zaire'. In the center is a right-facing profile portrait of President Mobutu.
